Abstract

The critical stress intensity factor KIC under the condition of plane deformation was determined in accordance with the requirements of ISO 12135:2021 Alternative methods for determining fracture toughness were described. The method of calculating the KIC coefficient using short rectangular samples of a square section with a chevron notch was evaluated as the most promising. The experimental testing of the method was described, and the fracture toughness obtained by the standard method on compact samples and that with a chevron  notch was compared.
