Abstract

It is established that the technological operation of expanding welded straight-seam pipes has a positive effect on their mechanical strength and crack growth resistance. For the metal of the expanded pipe in the heat-affected zone, the yield stress of the metal increases by approximately 8% with a slight change in such mechanical characteristics as the ultimate strength, relative elongation, relative area reduction, and impact toughness. At the same time, the material resistance to the development of crack-like defects increases, and regardless of the distance from the weld, the rate of fatigue crack growth is always lower for the metal of the expanded pipe in comparison to similar cases for the unexpanded pipe.
